Back in to town we go, we get a good look at the Mississippi River, and the bridge between the states and the city of Memphis
Memphis was hit by a small pox epidemic in the late 1800's and the city was disbanded, the first black millionaire at the time bought up all this land on Beal Street, many of the businesses were owned by African Americans, Louie Armstrong, BB King Hambone, many famous people played here on Beal Street, the Home of the Blues
Beal Street was a tough and rough street in the old days, in the 60's it started closing down and there wasn't much left of it, but a company came in and developed it back in the 80's to what it is today
The world famous Blue Street Cafe, President Clinton ate here, and the list goes on and on, Cindy and Linda ate here, well we ordered ribs to go, and catfish, and oh, they have the world's best tamales, we ordered some of them to go, our refrigerator is not filled up, we are going to give them all the taste test
Gibson gives tours of their guitar factory
Downtown Memphis is kind of like all other down towns, except for Beal Street and,
Memphis has a baseball stadium in it's downtown area and a basketball arena too, which brings us back to
The Pyramid, that's what it's called, they built it because of Memphis's obvious connections to Egypt, I guess I missed those connections, some say it is the world's third largest pyramid, it used to house the basketball teams but it doesn't now, they built a new arena, it doesn't have anything in it now, you'll never guess why
When they built it they didn't have earthquake standards, they didn't think they had an earthquake problem, they redid their study and found out that yes they did, and this pyramid was on the top of a fault line, and was built on fill sand, so it has sat, empty
Some said take it down, but wouldn't that be a shame what with it's Egyptian connections, well, next year Bass is going to make it a Superstore, as long as the county retrofits it and makes it earthquake safe, can you imagine how many Bass boats they can get in here?
They also have a Danny Thomas Boulevard
They say the name Memphis is in more songs than any other city, over a thousand, I can't think of one, can you?
We are home finally with our next door neighbors, Sue, Max, and Timmy's new love, Molly.
We have our ribs, catfish, and tamales, Sue agrees with us, they are the best tamales any of us have ever eaten, the ribs are the best too, you know if President Clinton eats there,
it's gonna be good.
Maybe it was Memphis? by Pam Tillis. Old country song.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite song with "Memphis" in it is "Walking in Memphis", by Marc Cohn.
ReplyDeleteWow! Memphis, of all places, has a PYRAMID!! If Memphis can have one, then I must have one too! Linda and Cindy, you should have one at the "compound"!
ReplyDeleteMemphis is the capital of ancient Egypt. You can get more information on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memphis,_Egypt
ReplyDeleteHere is one song with Memphis: I Know of two versions one by Chuck Berry the other Jim Croce. And I'm sure many other artists as well.
ReplyDeleteLong distance information, give me Memphis Tennessee
Help me find the party trying to get in touch with me
She could not leave her number, but I know who placed the call
'Cause my uncle took the message and he wrote it on the wall
Help me, information, get in touch with my Marie
She's the only one who'd phone me here from Memphis Tennessee
Her home is on the south side, high up on a ridge
Just a half a mile from the Mississippi Bridge
Help me, information, more than that I cannot add
Only that I miss her and all the fun we had
But we were pulled apart because her mom did not agree
And tore apart our happy home in Memphis Tennessee
Cool, I know those songs just couldn't think of them. And now we know the rest of the story about Memphis's connection to Egypt, who would ever have thought that.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you're having fun...I'm so jealous!!
